Places where dinosaurs live!

Year 1

This week Year One have focused on the story of 'Katie and the Dinosaurs' by James Mayhew.

We have been thinking very carefully about the structure of the story, by identifying its different sections: opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending. One exciting way of showing our understanding was an outside activity where we created story maps and placed pictured signposts showing where the different parts of the story were. It was a great activity that we all really enjoyed, especially as we were outside! We were also lucky that the pictures didn't blow away!

In another activity Year One acted parts of the story out. This was a really fun activity which required our actors to freeze and hold an image to represent a part of the story. Together as a class we created a success criteria and we all had to think about facial expressions, our body language and trying very hard to stay still when we heard 'freeze'!

Year 2

Over the next couple of weeks 2S our focusing on the story ‘Mrs Armitage on wheels by Quentin Blake’. After listening to the story, 2s went outside to create a story map with a range of natural materials.The children then retold the story to each other from their story map.

Also in Year 2's geography lessons,they been learning through our theme topic of transport. Year 2 have all been finding out about how different places around the world are linked to each other through different modes of transport. In one lesson they looked at how distance and terrain affect the mode of transport needed.

Oli and Grace have chosen to write about interesting places they would like to visit using a suitable mode of transport. Both Oli and Grace have used time connectives to signal the order of their journey as well as paragraphs to separate ideas.

We hope to continue using practical activities to explore all new stories!

  1. Oli we liked that you used time connectives (eg.first, next, then) and have chosen the order you do your journey in carefully. To make your writing even more better, we think that you could use some adjectives to describe what you are travelling in.

    Well done Oli and Grace we were very impressed with your expedition.
    Here are your two ticks and a wish;
    / time connectives such as then and next.
    / adjectives such as sparkly.
    *use varied punctuation such as commas.

    Wow Grace and Oli !
    We really enjoyed reading your work . We liked how you used good vocabulary (e.g. expedition). You should improve on your use of punctuation.

  4. Great work Year 2. We liked the use of time connectives and capital letters for proper nouns such as Barcelona and America. To extend your work you could use adjectives to add detail. 5E
