Dinosaurs on Wheels...

Year 1

It has been a very dramatic week in Year One... there was a dinosaur invasion on the playground! When we went out to investigate, we found muddy footprints and bones everywhere! We wrote about what we discovered:

Laithe 1M.

Then Miss Heywood asked us to find out more about the dinosaurs that were roaming around on the playground. We went to see if we could identify any of them and then recorded our findings:

On Tuesday we went out on a journey around school to look at different objects. We then used our ideas to write a narrative.

Year 2
We spent the week planning and writing our own narratives using Quentin Blake’s Mrs Armitage on Wheels for inspiration.

Amy chose to start her narrative using a question to draw in the reader’s interest. She also used a range of descriptive sentences to allow the reader to build up an image of the main character as they read. In the following sessions Amy will revisit  her work to edit spellings, punctuation or word choices to build on her initial narrative.

Fossils on the run!

Year 1
This is our last week on our narrative Katie and the Dinosaurs. We have rewritten the story to include our new character... the terrifying dilophosaurus.

We wrote our story over two days: day 1- opening and build up, day 2- problem, resolution and ending. We followed an extensive success criteria to make our writing interesting. We enjoyed acting out each part before we wrote it to inspire us and generate some additional vocabulary.
Success Criteria:

  • Always writing SC
  • Adjectives (mysterious, eerie)
  • Time connectives (first, next, then)
  • Onomatopoeia (bang, crash)
  • Alliteration
  • Connectives (and, because)
  • Verbs (walked, ran)
  • Adverbs (carefully, quietly)

Here are two examples of our brilliant writing!

Year 2
This week we went outside to find an interesting object. Once we had found our interesting object we used our imagination to change what it could be.
In 2D we found a rock that looked like a tooth so our poem is about a rugged tooth.

We found a rugged tooth
It grinds and crushes all food it meets!
It was hidden in a deep, dark fossil.

Who did it belong to all those years ago?

In 2S we generated descriptive phrases to describe our object which was then used in a poem.

Places where dinosaurs live!

Year 1

This week Year One have focused on the story of 'Katie and the Dinosaurs' by James Mayhew.

We have been thinking very carefully about the structure of the story, by identifying its different sections: opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending. One exciting way of showing our understanding was an outside activity where we created story maps and placed pictured signposts showing where the different parts of the story were. It was a great activity that we all really enjoyed, especially as we were outside! We were also lucky that the pictures didn't blow away!

In another activity Year One acted parts of the story out. This was a really fun activity which required our actors to freeze and hold an image to represent a part of the story. Together as a class we created a success criteria and we all had to think about facial expressions, our body language and trying very hard to stay still when we heard 'freeze'!

Year 2

Over the next couple of weeks 2S our focusing on the story ‘Mrs Armitage on wheels by Quentin Blake’. After listening to the story, 2s went outside to create a story map with a range of natural materials. The children then retold the story to each other from their story map.

Also in Year 2's geography lessons, they been learning through our theme topic of transport. Year 2 have all been finding out about how different places around the world are linked to each other through different modes of transport. In one lesson they looked at how distance and terrain affect the mode of transport needed.

Oli and Grace have chosen to write about interesting places they would like to visit using a suitable mode of transport. Both Oli and Grace have used time connectives to signal the order of their journey as well as paragraphs to separate ideas.

We hope to continue using practical activities to explore all new stories!

Transporting Dinosaurs

Year 1

This term our new theme is dinosaurs. We have looked at a poem called The King of all the Dinosaurs which is about a monstrous Tyrannosaurus Rex. We spent the first part of the week acting out each verse then we moved onto writing our own verses using poetic features.

1D are performing a verse of the poem below:

To give us some ideas for our writing we listened to a sound bite of a Tyrannosaurus Tex roaring. We wrote down similes and onomatopoeia words to add to our verses.

Year 2

This week in Literacy we have been looking at a poem called Travel Details by Stewart Henderson. To help us remember the poem we created actions for each line. Here is a video clip of the first verse of the poem. The actions are performed by agroup of children while the rest of the class read the verse.

Inspired by photographs of a range of vehicles we also created a class poem describing three well known vehicles.

Check back next week for more fantastic writing! Don't forget to share your thoughts and feelings.
